Background

Holt Renfrew is the leading Canadian luxury retailer. The scope of their business success has created a need for increasingly complex communications and document management systems throughout the organization due to data duplication issues and lack of enterprise search functionality.

Hundreds of thousands of pieces of data were stored in various repositories, with stores and various corporate offices having their own separate data sources and structures. Key stakeholders at Holt Renfrew identified a need for a data management system that would allow for managed collaboration between various departments and stores. Holt Renfrew approached non~linear creations (NLC) to develop an enterprise-wide intranet to fulfill this need.

Solution

NLC started this engagement with a high-level strategic consultancy to discuss Holt Renfrew’s overall strategy and vision, determining how their corporate goals could be translated into an intranet experience that delivered on these aims. In this consultation, NLC met with representatives from the major departments, including Buying, Finance, HR, Marketing and IT. Four core aims were identified: enterprise search, document management, collaboration functionality and a centralized product image repository. These goals were translated into a strategic functionality that was designed and developed within the SharePoint 2007 framework.

Outcome

A SharePoint-driven intranet has now been deployed within Holt Renfrew’s corporate offices for more effective communication and collaboration. This intranet has overcome the significant communication and data management challenges previously facing the organization.

Because of its flexibility and adaptability, the SharePoint framework that NLC has developed for Holt Renfrew will allow room for both ongoing and future needs to be met. SharePoint has become the key platform within the company and will continue to deliver significant strategic benefits to this impressive organization. Future functionality is now under consideration, including extranet development for communication and collaboration with external suppliers and strategic partners.
