Our friend, Danielle Brigida, from the National Wildlife Federation shared her thoughts on developing and measuring effective non-profit social media campaigns this weekend at SXSW. Accompanied by Carie Lewis of the Humane Society of the United States; Wendy Harman of the American Red Cross; David Neff of the American Cancer Society; and moderator Beth Kanter; the group recited, rhymed and rapped their way through their social media successes.
Holly Ross of the Nonprofit Technology Network posted video outtakes of the session:
A Few Nonprofit Social Media Campaign Examples from the Session
- Wildlife Watch
The National Wildlife Federation encourages members and web-savvy wildlife enthusiasts to share their wildlife sightings across the US. As part of this campaign, they recently incorporated more social features such as Flickr photo sharing and Twitter tags to capture these wildlife sightings. - LOLseals Photo Caption ContestThe Humane Society of America provided photos of baby harp seals and encouraged the public to create a LOLcat-style caption to promote their campaign to protect seals.
- Volunteer Updates via UtterliAmerican Red Cross volunteers levereged http://www.utterli.com to broadcast real-time disaster reports from the Virginia Tornadoes.
- Austin Tweetup Blood Drive
David Neff of the American Cancer Society and members of the Austin Social Media Club, the 501 Austin Tech Club rallied to organize a blood drive in Austin, TX. Their efforts in promoting the event via Twitter doubled the traffic to the clinic and brought in many first time donors.
